Dark Tourist

Halloween is still a little ways away, but once “Dark Tourist,” the new Netflix docuseries, dropped, it piqued my interest. Many travelers seek out the beauty of different cultures when abroad, but there is also a dark side to some cultures, and without that history, they wouldn’t be what they are today. This is a subset of tourism known as dark tourism, when travelers visit places that are historically associated with death or tragedy.

 

Journalist David Farrier travels to a different region in each episode and immerses himself in different cultures that use their dark pasts to help generate an alternative kind of tourism.
