Postcard Press Picks:

Iceland’s Banned Christmas Ad

Earlier this week, Iceland’s banned Christmas ad went viral on the Internet. The animated commercial features a young girl angry with an orangutan that is destroying her room, so she throws him out. But, before he goes, she asks why he is in her room to begin with. His answer is the reason the commercial was banned: deforestation in the rainforest has destroyed his home and has taken his mother away.

The commercial was banned in Iceland because the country has strict rules against running political ads during the holidays, and this commercial happens to be very political. However, it is important for people to see it and understand what it’s saying, and that’s why it’s this week’s Postcard Press Pick.

Deforestation has been a huge environmental issue for a number of years now, and it’s important to be reminded of its impact. While it might be difficult to stomach during a time of the year that’s meant to be filled with warm and fuzzy feelings, there’s really no better time to show the damage that is still being caused around the world. The holiday season can be filled with a lot of waste between packaging, ordering gifts online, and travel. It’s a much-needed reminder that we must make some changes or else these animals will continue to lose their homes and the world will lose more of its beauty.
